Our client is a leading real estate company, known for handling multiple high-value projects across India. Recently, they faced a severe internal data breach involving confidential information related to upcoming projects. The client suspected that an employee was leaking sensitive images and documents through social media platforms, particularly via Telegram.
The client approached us to investigate this issue, fearing significant reputational and financial damage. The challenge was to identify the culprit, recover the leaked data, and provide actionable insights on how the breach occurred. Given the increasing complexity of modern social platforms, this required the integration of advanced social network forensics techniques to thoroughly examine the employee’s social media activity and extract relevant data.
ECS deployed its specialized social media forensics team to conduct a comprehensive investigation. We utilized advanced forensic tools such as Cellebrite to perform an in-depth analysis of the suspect’s Android device. The goal was to retrieve and analyze communication logs, media files, and encrypted data shared over platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and other social networking sites.
Data Extraction: We extracted communication and media files shared via Telegram to trace unauthorized transactions of sensitive information.
Metadata Analysis: By analyzing the metadata of shared files, we were able to determine the time and location where the data was uploaded, providing insights into the employee’s activities.
Cross-Platform Analysis: Our forensic experts linked social media activity from Telegram to other platforms like Instagram and Facebook, revealing a wider web of potential data exposure.
The forensic analysis confirmed that the employee had shared confidential project details and images with unauthorized parties through Telegram. We documented all findings in a comprehensive report, including timelines, communication logs, and recovered data. This report served as crucial evidence, helping the client take legal action against the employee.
Additionally, ECS recommended measures to enhance the client’s internal security policies, particularly around social media use within the workplace. We suggested implementing stricter access controls and monitoring of social media activities to prevent future breaches.
This case demonstrated the importance of social media forensics and social network forensics in identifying and preventing internal data breaches. ECS’s expertise in digital forensics allowed the real estate company to mitigate the potential damage, recover leaked data, and take corrective action swiftly. Our solutions not only addressed the immediate issue but also strengthened the client’s overall cybersecurity framework for long-term protection.
